You can basically skip the first half of the book. Last seen in Deepsixhe has been involved in the space-flight debate for years. It had nothing to do with the plot, nothing with the future, it didn’t really impact the characters, nothing in the world changed because of it and it was resolved in the blandest way possible, a light sentence.

Decido che voglio leggere anche i volumi precedenti. Well, I generally liked his other books so I guess I will go back and finish this. Set it in space, add some enigmatic aliens bent on preventing the end of the universe, mix in a B-plot about corporate greed and there you have it, another McDevitt bestseller!

Most of the first pages are taken up with politics and funding and fighting and UFO sightings and it’s mfdevitt pretty damn boring.

The figure depicted is clearly not human. It’s not realistic for someone to be in that position indefinitely, and McDevitt does a fantastic job of telling the after. A ship is sent to place monitors in key spots to watch out for these to see what is out there. Not the kind of stuff one should expect from a Science Fiction story that is meant to lift us out of our normal every-day reality. Unfortunately, as written it leans very heavily on its predecessor.

With no intelligent, technologically advanced aliens yet discovered, and an Earth possibly dying from global warming and ecological chaos, interstellar travel is slowly withering, with only a handful of haulage companies and Orion Tours regularly plying the space lanes. Why would I want to read what a bland heroine did before she did anything interesting?

Hutch herself is still serving as an administrator for the unpleasant politician Asquith at the Academy, and is busy raising her daughter. Sep 19, Vincent Stoessel rated it did not like it. And she does get to be the hero in this book, indirectly. I’m not sure that’s going to happen. At the same time there are increasing reports of “Moonriders”, strange spherical objects possibly of alien origin odysssey appear around interstellar sites.

The space agencies in the Priscilla Hutchins stories have actually saved the Earth, have discovered incredible wonders on distant planets–have laid bare a potential galactic threat exacerbated by ignorance, and yet people have returned their attentions to the jak and ludicrous.
