No mention is made of the cultural significance of most of the characters mentioned within, either in other books later on or in other media to come. I really like this book and all of stories it references that I had never read or even heard of. I’ll admit that I regressed to fantasic mental age of five and wanted the rest of the book to be similarly illustrated—but it isn’t, and there’s absolutely no reason why encycoopedia should be apart from my nerdy joy at seeing a giant robot in a hat.

It’s a truly magnificent work, though due to a limited print run and high demand on vixtoriana secondary market, unobtainable at any reasonable price in hardcopy – I had to read it in Kindle format.

These aren’t necessarily essay-length, most covering no more than a couple of pages or so, but aim to establish a sense of context for the rest of the referenced works. Wells, to Russian newspaper serials and Chinese martial arts novels, The Encyclopedia of Fantastic Victoriana is a truly exhaustive look at every aspect of fantastic literature in the days of Queen Victoria. I would hate to imagine trying to actually use the hardcopy version of it as an actual reference book.

Huge amounts of painstaking research have clearly gone into this book eight years, according to the acknowledgements pageand the clarity of the author’s understanding shines through. Rather more fantatic for me, at least is the “Author Index” that the publishers make available on their website herewhich makes navigating the encyclopedia awfully easier.

Tim was born at a very early age, and plans to die shortly. Like Moorcock, I don’t agree with all of Nevins’s views.

These bitesize chunks of analysis are a fine way to satisfy immediate curiosity and provide a springboard for further research. Probably the most amazing collection of Victorian “pulp” fiction references available. Other passions o his life include American football focusing on the Buffalo Bills ; classical, film and Celtic music; Star Wars; baked pasta dishes; and more chocolate and coffee than can really be healthy. Jess knows his stuff, fo now thanks to his encyclopedia, so do I. Despite Nevins’somewhat apologetic note regarding being subjective, it is my opinion that that is the only way by which the Victorian literature can be made vivid enough to oversome the fog and gaslight.

But the more rigorous student of the Fantastic knows that Fantasy, as well as those tropes that eventually spun away to become science fiction, are far older than just a hundred years.

In that, I agree wholeheartedly with Michael Moorcock’s introduction, encycloppedia he notes that “Jess Nevins has drawn us a map to the well.
