This is perhaps the only story whose subject matter is as alien to me as Mars but which I had to reread to relive the sheer pleasure of Fitzgerald’s tantalizing pace, smart dialogues and brilliant, lively characters. After reading it again twenty plus years later – the angst, Marjorie, and Bernice – I still love this short story set in the Roaring Twenties. It is the craziest, most racist, most loveable story I have ever read and it should be mandatory reading in African American History classes all over this country.
